J. F. Lawton's "Jackson" will serve as opening-night film of the 10th annual Lake Arrowhead Film Festival

J. F. Lawton's "Jackson" will serve as opening-night film of the 10th annual Lake Arrowhead Film Festival, to be held at the Lake Arrowhead Resort & Spa from April 2-5. Barry Primus and Charlie Robinson, who star in the film as two bums whose lives are affected by a $20 bill, will attend the opening.

The lineup also includes such features as Francesco Lucente's "Badland," LeVar Burton's "Reach for Me," Duane Crichton's "Saving God" and Charles Evered's "Adopt a Sailor" and such short films as Chris Jones' "Gone Fishing" and Peter Beigen's "Ceremonies of the Horsemen."

Cinematographer Wally Pfister will present an award to fellow cinematographers Vilmos Zsigmond and the late Lazslo Kovacs, which Zsigmond will accept on their behlf. The two filmmakers are the subject of James Chressanthis' documentary "No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos."

At the fest's Friday night gala, Jim Thebaut will receive the Humanitarian Award for his work as exec producer of the documentary "The American Southwest: Are We Running Dry?"

Actor Chris McDonald will host the Sunday Filmmaker Awards Luncheon.


Catch sights and sounds of valley on film festival's silver screen

Darryl Macdonald isn't the type of programmer who will present a section of local films just to appease local sponsors.

But this year, for perhaps the first time in the Macdonald era, there's enough good films with local ties to warrant a Valley Views program.

“We've got at least eight films that have a major local connection,” the executive director said, “starting of course with ‘Adopt A Sailor,' by Charles Evered.

The film – which stars Emmy and Tony Award-winner Bebe Neuwirth, Emmy winner Peter Coyote and Ethan Peck, grandson of Gregory Peck – premiered at UCR’s Palm Desert Graduate Center in August.

In the summer of 2002, director Erica Gould called Charles Evered and asked him---along with several other New York area playwrights, whether he would be interested in writing a play for an event she was organizing.
